Rafael Yaluff

programme cycle 01 / KARAOKE

Rafael Yaluff was born in Santiago, Chile, in 1983 and spent his youth in the interstice between dictatorship, the arrival of democracy, and the consumer-driven economy of the shopping mall era in the 90s. In university, he studied art and philosophy before leaving Santiago to live a nomadic life between Brazil, Patagonia, and Europe. It was in Europe where he encountered remnants of the punk movement that would influence his work. His projects involve drawing, painting, and sculptural constructions, dealing mainly with issues related to urgency, tragicomedy, intimacy, honesty, and the untimely. Currently, he lives and works in New York.

Karaoke is a collaborative project by Rafael Yaluff with Bruno Lança, Ana Brito, José Pinto, and Tiago Madaleno. It emerged as part of the challenge to use glass and from my desire to paint. There are three paintings about the city and its liquids. Additionally, there are three sculptures about science fiction and transfusion. Karaoke is an interpretation, and here we offer, hopefully, the music, and if all goes well, you can come and sing a song at least.
